Alison Mays Replaces Kristen Wilson as Director of "Kids On Courts"

Alison Mays has taken over the local responsibilities for our "Kids on Courts" program, as Kristen Wilson and her family moved back home to Michigan.  We all miss Kristen and are happy that she is able to participate remotely, and are confident that Alison will carry on the success of our KOC programs.  Please join us in welcoming Alison Mays as our new Director of Tennis!

BOKS:  Building Our Kids Success

On June 10, the Mardy Fish Children's Foundation hosted a training event with the Reebok Foundation BOKS trainers.  The four-hour training session was attended by 31 people who are interested in bringing the BOKS program to their organization/school.

BOKS is a free before school physical activity program aimed to get elementary and middle school children moving in the morning and their brains ready for a day of learning.  To learn more, visit bokskids.org.

Greetings!

Thank you for supporting the Mardy Fish Children's Foundation!

Our vision is to provide the children of Indian River County, Florida with a safe and secure place after school- a place with recreational and enrichment programs blending the lessons of their classrooms with the lessons of fitness, health and character.

Friday Night Fish

Each month, we offer a fun night of tennis activities at the Boulevard Tennis Club, from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.  Each session includes one hour of on-court activities and fitness, followed by a pizza party for the participants, ages 4 - 14.  It is a fun night of tennis camaraderie for all!

We offer scholarships to children in need because we want all children to have the ability to enjoy making friends, learning healthy habits and having fun on the tennis court!

The children are divided by age and ability level for the on-court session. The youngest children play a variety of games involving tennis specific skills, fun, and lots of movement! The older groups also play a variety of fun games as well as participate in match play. Parents are invited to watch their children while sitting on the deck overlooking the courts.

The next FNF will be scheduled for Friday, June 6 2014 from 6:00- 7:30pm. Parents can register online @ www.mffkids.org.

Middle School Tennis 2014

Middle School Tennis closed its season on May 3rd with our first end of season quad tournament.  While the weather was a little soggy, spirits were high and season ended with smiles and giveaways.

Thank you to all four middle schools that participated: Gifford, Storm Grove, Oslo and Sebastian.  Also, a special thank you to our coaches, team moms, and parents!

After-School Tennis Program

The Mardy Fish Children's Foundation offered fall and spring sessions to interested local elementary schools. In the fall we offered the program at Beachland Elementary School, Pelican Island Elementary School, Highlands Elementary School, Treasure Coast Elementary School, Citrus Elementary School, Gifford Youth Activities Center, Rosewood Magnet School and Saint Edwards School. In the spring we worked with students at Sebastian Elementary School, Osceola Magnet School, South Vero Imagine, Vero Beach Elementary School, Glendale Elementary School, and Dodgertown Elementary School.

Our tennis professionals are certified USPTA teaching professionals. We teach with a ratio of one pro to eight to ten children and we utilize highly qualified assistants and volunteers to assist with the programs where needed. After school sessions are typically one hour in duration. Program size varies from school to school but is generally between 10 and 20 children. The tennis professionals bring the tennis courts to the schools! We utilize appropriately sized nets and tennis balls for the age group involved.

Mardy Fish's Six Healthy Habits are instructed and encouraged! In addition to instruction of tennis stroke production, tennis etiquette and sportsmanship as well as match play- there is an emphasis on fitness and movement. Each school received instruction for 5 weeks, once daily. Participating schools are those which reached out to our program. We are continuing to try to grow and include the remaining schools in our area as we are able.

The Mardy Fish Children's Foundation After-School Tennis Program is providing the opportunity for all children to learn to play tennis as well as learn habits for a healthy lifestyle.

This was a very rewarding year for our Kids On Courts pros, as you can tell from this brief exchange between Pro Dean Mays and a student from Dodgertown Elementary:

"This tennis is so cool- I'm gonna play it in the Olympics!" - 4th grade student from Dodgertown Elementary

"Great, I'm going to watch!"  MFCF Tennis Pro, Dean Mays

Ask the Fish Family

Tom and Sally and Mardy and Stacey Fish know what it takes to develop a healthy lifestyle and to be a successful athlete.  They are here to answer your questions!

Question:
I've been feeling a little overweight and sluggish and bored lately.  What can I do to get out of this rut?

Answer:

We can relate - as this does happen to most people at some time.  In this video clip, Mardy talks about his "A Ha" moment when he really clicked into the importance of being committed and healthier eating.  This is what we talk about in the schools with "Mardy's Six Healthy Habits."

Fish Kids Programs

Through our partnership with the School District of Indian River County, we were honored to sponsor health and fitness programs in our local elementary schools.  These programs incorporated our Six Healthy Habits and the students were able to learn from "doing."  Several of our programs culminated with the District-wide track meet in April.  We're so proud of these fine children and the excellent Coaches!
